no less than 1 liter of water，no fewer than 100 people?是我們的傳統用法。現代英語有一個有趣的現象，就是less?代替fewer?形容可數名詞，例如：

Do you have 10 courses each week?

No. We have less.

顯然按嚴格語法應該是：We have fewer.

（注意，在我們國內的考試中請按照嚴格語法，不要用less替代fewer。道理你懂的。）

那么在（向國外投稿的）英文論文中下列用法都沒問題：

no less/fewer than 100 servers?（不少于100臺服務器）

The cloud service provider deployed no less than 50 supercomputers acting as servers on the cloud.（云服務提供商在云上布置了不少于50臺超級計算機作為服務器。）

但是，永遠沒有fewer替代less，例如下列句子：

The ratio is no less than 5%.（比例不少于5%）

寫成The ratio is no fewer than 5%是絕對錯誤的。

此外，可數不可數的“更多、更大”more、greater不能互相替代。no more than 和no greater than 要分清。

為什么less?現在傾向于替代fewer連英語母語的人都解釋不清楚，而且有些人不能接受。筆者認為可能是發音的原因吧，less發音比fewer輕松多了。
